Head of Academy Performance

Based at Hale End Sports Ground and London-Colney, Arsenal Football Academy offers a full time football training programme for elite youth players. The Academy has for many years been a world leader in its field and aims to individually tailor each player’s development as a footballer by providing a world class Youth Development programme. The programme promotes the development of elite training environments to consistently outperform international competition. By placing players at the heart of the programme, the aim is to develop and grow Strong Young Gunners, within the most challenging and caring football academy in the world. Each player’s development is therefore considered holistically with focus placed on supporting players to show respect, discipline and humility as they aspire towards becoming better people and consequently, better players.

The Academy is searching for a Head of Academy Performance who will lead, manage and coordinate all aspects of Academy performance across Sports Science, Strength and Conditioning, Nutrition, and will include working with aspects of Sports Medicine in order to improve sporting performance. This will incorporate areas such as Injury Prevention and Rehabilitation, Physiology, Motor Control, biomechanics, athletes’ recovery, sports technology, anthropometry, injury audit and the ongoing development of the department. The successful candidate will be progressive and use their initiative and industry knowledge to incorporate and explore new methods as appropriate.

The successful candidate will aim to achieve the objectives laid out in the Academy performance support department plan with the view to contributing to the Academy vision and mission. They will work alongside the U9s – U23s Academy Coaches and wider support staff to design and implement an integrated player development programme focusing on the four Academy pillars: creating effective team players, lifelong learners, most efficient movers and champion mentality.

Aiming to start on or before 1 July 2021, the role will be based at Arsenal’s training ground in London Colney and there will be a regular requirement to travel to attend the dedicated Academy site at Hale End.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, implement and oversee the Academy Performance Department Plan to contribute to the vision and mission of the academy and is embedded in the Club values.
  • Ensure the practical implementation of best practice at all levels within the Academy and U9s – U23s. This will include ongoing monitoring and evaluation to assess impact of the Academy Performance Plan upon player development.
  • Encourage an interdisciplinary approach of working within the department that includes close links to all areas of the Club.
  • Maintain all legal and professional qualifications in relation to own profession and maintain the equivalent standards and relevant Continuous Professional Development for all Performance staff within the Academy in line with Youth Development Rules and Elite Player Performance Plan (EPPP).
  • Oversee the development and effective management of related resources, facilities and equipment.
  • Maintain detailed records for the department of all Sports Medicine and Performance actions in accordance with relevant legislation, policies and procedures.
  • Create and implement systems and methodologies to evaluate the success of the department in relation to the academy vision, mission and the four pillars.
  • Review and agree budgetary needs in cooperation with the Academy manager and relevant stakeholders.
  • Design and present, for assessment and appraisal by the Academy Manager, strategies for individually improving the physical development of all the U9 – U23 age groups at Hale End and Colney to ensure all agreed strategies are implemented within agreed timescales.
  • Meet with the Academy Manager and Club Medical and Sports Science staff on a regular basis to report and review progress.
  • Prepare and submit reports for academy players and trialists in player progress meetings with evidence of each player’s physical status and development potential.
  • Maintain discipline as set out in the Arsenal Football Club Code of Conduct (Players, Parents Coaches).
  • Maintain Arsenal Football Club’s Child Protection, Health, Safety and Equal Opportunity procedures as practice.
  • Adhere to a strict code of confidentiality in respect of any information relating to Arsenal Football Club and its operation.
  • Undertake any other duties as seen appropriate by the Academy Manager.
  • Be an active part of the Academy Management Team (AMT).

Education/Qualifications/Training:

  • An MSc (Hons) in Sport Science and accreditation with British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences (highly desirable)
  • A BSc in Sports Science or a registered physiotherapist member of the Health and Care Professions Council (essential)
  • A current recognised first aid qualification from FA AREA, ATMMiF or equivalent/higher qualification (essential – but training can be provided)
  • Appropriate accreditation as a Strength and Conditioning coach (BASES or UKSCA)
  • A thorough understanding of the various sports science and medicine disciplines and their impact on the training and performance of young elite athletes.

  • An excellent understanding of scientific methods of trialling and validating assessment, monitoring and evaluation equipment and protocols.

Required Experience:

  • A verifiable record of success of working with elite young footballers and/or elite athletes aged 9 years to 23 years
  • A proven track record with a high level of experience in the provision of physiotherapy and strength and conditioning services to athletes in elite level sports to improve performance, prevent injuries and ensure timely recoveries.
  • Knowledge and experience of EPPP, with the ultimate aim of ensuring Category 1 status is maintained.
  • Able to demonstrate added value of multidisciplinary performance support for players across U9 – U23s groups.
  • Experience of working at a football or major sports club/Federation.
